White Rocks Campgrounds https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwj/recarea/?recid=74023 35 miles from Blacksburg ******************************* Friday – head out @ 10 am, set-up camp, do some hiking around the immediate area (several good trails). ******************************* Saturday & Sunday: Several options to choose from: ***************************************** Sunrise or Sunset hike: Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwj/recarea/?recid=73737 25 min drive time to Trailhead Friday or Saturday night; and/or Saturday or Sunday mornings ************************************* Mountain bike on a flat, rails to trails – Potts Creek Trail https://www.traillink.com/trail/potts-valley-rail-trail/ 10 minute drive, or bike from the campgrounds (~ 3miles) ******************************************* Mountain bike: unlimited mountain biking options, especially on the Forest Service roads in the area. *************************************** Road biking: Big Stoney Creek Road and Waiteville Rd have some nice road riding with little traffic. Waiteville runs parallel the ridgeline in the valley is relatively flat for this area. There are also some epic climbing options ************************************** Longer hiking/trail running options: on AT or Alleghany trail available ******************************************* Butt Mountain Fire Tower: requires some off-roading to get there or mountain biking/hiking Tower no longer accessible to climb (stairs removed at bottom and top) ********************************************** Barney’s Wall, upper Cascade falls – possible access from Forest Service roads https://www.hikingupward.com/jnf/thecascadesbarneyswall/ ********************************** Glen Alton – 14 minutes from White Rocks Campground https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gwj/recarea/?recid=73717 *********************************** Stay in the campground area and further explore the trails. ********************************** Fishing on Big Stony Creek – 13 minutes from campground. Great for native brook trout fishing. MUST have a Virginia Trout fishing license – can be purchased at Tangent Outfitters in Pembroke (on the way out to the campground). Tangent would also be a good place to get any tackle you need and advice on fishing this creek. ********************************************** Sunset hike at Wind Rock on AT: 12 minute drive, short hike, Friday and/or Saturday ********************************************* Sunday – all options above….pack-up early/mid-afternoon head back to campus.

What You Should Bring

What to bring: Camping gear and mountain bikes are available for rent at Venture Out https://recsports.vt.edu/outdooractivities/outdoorrecreation/rentalrates.html Camping gear: • Tent (or hammock) • Ground pad • Sleeping bag • Extra clothes • Towel • Toiletries • Food for 2 ½ days • Camping bowl/plate and utensils • Water bottle • Cup to drink hot stuff (coffee, hot chocolate, tea, apple cider) • Head lamp, preferably one with a red light option Day backpack – for hikes and/or bike rides Cooking gear: We’ll provide cooking gear, feel free to bring your own if you’d prefer. Bring your bike if you’d like to go for a mountain or road bike ride. If you have a bike, be sure to have a helmet.
