Description

One of the best ways to ensure that the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) remains conserved for years to come is by protecting the boundaries of the land on which it lies. This public land is the backbone of the largest natural corridor that remains east of the Mississippi River, creating a haven and migration path for humans and animals alike. Anyone can become a vital part of this process by participating in the Boundary Program. The Boundary Program focuses on clearly marking and maintaining the property lines of the National Park Service—owned land surrounding the A.T. so that the A.T. remains free of encroachments and preserved for future generations. A day of boundary work can include everything from painting special markings on trees along the boundary to bushwhacking dense vegetation or demolishing abandoned hunting stands. It is important that we all work together and pool all our resources—from knowledge about the lay of the land to energy to tackle more challenging areas— to preserve the Trail. For those interested, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will be hosting a Boundary Training Workshop in Giles, VA at the start of each day. The workshop will consist of an introductory Boundary Maintenance 101 tailgate session, followed by fieldwork in the afternoon. Please attend this free workshop with the ATC and help further our efforts to protect the Appalachian Trail. Please Bring: Sturdy boots for hiking off-trail, warm layers that you don’t mind bushwhacking in or getting paint on, plenty of water, lunch and snacks for the day. Provided: Orange vest, compasses, measuring tapes, paint, paint brushes, folding saws, boundary maps, and PPE- gloves and First Aid Kit. Attendance: We are limiting attendance to 6 people and all attendees must be vaccinated or PCR tested 72 hours before the workday. Questions: Please reach out to Conner McBane, Natural Resource Specialist with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for any questions. Email- cmcbane@appalachiantrail.org Cell- 540-525-6812
