Description

Winter means hibernation, and hibernation means stay away from bat hibernacula! Join us as we go caving in one of the few VA caves that is not used by bats over the winter. Island Ford Cave is a 1400' horizontal cave preserved by the West Virginia Cave Conservancy in Covington, Virginia, and an excellent beginner caving adventure. Due to a quirk of its entrance (you'll see), it is not used as a hibernaculum by bats, so we'll go visit it during the cold weather while other caves are restricted for the safety of their inhabitants. No experience is needed, however, there are some physically challenging portions to navigate if you want to go deep into the cave. Contact me ahead of time if you have concerns. It should also be noted that caving is a very muddy activity; wear appropriate clothing, i.e. warm and easy to clean off. I personally prefer two old long-sleeved cotton t-shirts and synethic running pants, with a change of clothes left in the car. Sneakers are fine, but traction is very important. Please bring extra flashlights and batteries if you possess them and indicate below if you do not.
