Description

This trip is a members-only trip and there is a cost to attend. The club is covering the majority of the cost, however, it is still $15 per person to attend. In order to secure your spot on the trip, you must both sign up on the website, and venmo me your $15. My venmo is @Logan-Duff-05, please use the caption "OCVT canoe trip." IMPORTANT: If I do not receive your venmo within 24hrs of your sign-up on the website, you will be removed from the trip. Also, I cannot guarantee a refund if you leave the trip after signing up, especially if it is close to the trip date. If someone is not able to fill your spot, then we still have to pay the outfitters for it. Make sure that you do not venmo me if you are on the waiting list either, wait until you are a confirmed attendee. All that is to insure that you don't sign up unless you are sure you can go because there are a lot of moving parts with this trip. As for experience, it would be a good idea if you have had some time on the water, but I was told this is a beginner-friendly trip that first-timers can do. We will not have a guide so you need to be confident in controlling your boat through light rapids. If you and a buddy are signing up for the trip, you can choose a canoe or tandem kayak when we get there, otherwise you will be in a single-person kayak. We will be getting pizza when we get to the outfitter in their cafe (the club is paying) before we head out on the water. We will move our cars from the outfitters to the pull-out spot, then be shuttled to the drop-in. After we finish on the water, we can go back to the outfitters to change clothes if needed. This is going to be a great trip and an awesome way to enjoy a day on the water or learn some basic kayaking/canoeing skills. The weather looks partly cloudy with a high of 67 degrees right now, which is perfect weather for this. If you are willing to commit to the trip, you should definitely join us. Feel free to ask me any questions!

Location

The place we are using is Tangent Outfitters in Pembroke, VA. It's about a 30min drive. If you do not have a car, we will arrange carpool at the meetup.

Driving Directions

The address is 201 Cascade Dr., Pembroke, VA 24136.

What You Should Bring

Tangent Outfitters is providing paddles, life jackets, maps, and the shuttle service from the building to the drop-in point. I would suggest quick-dry long pants and sleeves because there is a high UV index for that day and no shade, but nothing heavy that would soak up water(like jeans or sweatpants). Hopefully no one will flip their boat and get soaked, but it is possible so be prepared. You should bring a change of clothes and towel to leave in the car. Also bring water, a snack(if you want) and sunscreen. Wear shoes that can get wet like crocs, sandals, or old sneakers. I would not suggest bringing your phone down the river, but if you do, make sure it is in something waterproof and secured either to you or your backpack. Basically, you should be prepared for you and whatever is in your boat to get completely soaked as a worst-case scenario.
