Description
Come join us for an off-trail scavenger hunt! What are we looking for? Appalachian Trail survey monuments! The purpose of these work days is to monitor the boundary lines of the AT corridor. This is an essential component of the continuing preservation of the Appalachian Trail and the land surrounding it. Plus, it’s a rare opportunity to explore the forest off trail in different terrain and learn some wayfinding skills. We'll be meeting at the AT parking on SR 630/Northside Road. We will carpool to the home of a neighbor and walk up their road to the boundary line. From there we will hike and bushwhack about a mile to the boundary line. If you need to be back earlier for any reason, let us know and we can be flexible. These workdays are designed for first-time boundary volunteers and veterans alike -- so we'll start the day with an introductory Boundary Maintenance 101 tailgate session, followed by field work to immediately put those skills to good use. Our tasks for the day: Marking the trail corridor boundary line by painting blazes and hanging sings, clearing the line of vegetation, and locating the Appalachian Trail survey monuments. We are also on the lookout for any signs of illegal encroachment or misuse of public lands. Following this boundary line will take us over some steep and difficult terrain, so be prepared for a fun challenge. What you’ll need: The 10 essentials for hiking. Water, lunch, first aid. Plenty of layers! We’ll be using paint and bushwacking so wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. Sturdy boots, with a strong sole and ankle support. We’ll provide: Personal Protective Equipment First Aid Kit All tools and supplies needed for the workday These workdays cannot be done in the rain, or any inclement weather. This event can be cancelled as early as the day before work so check back here before heading out. Any questions?
