Description

Come join us for an off-trail, scavenger hunt of sorts. What are we looking for? Appalachian Trail geological monuments! These workdays are essential for the continuing preservation of the Appalachian Trail and the land surrounding it. Plus, it’s a rare opportunity to explore the forest off trail in different terrain and learn some wayfinding skills. These workdays are designed for first-time boundary volunteers and veterans alike -- so we'll start the day with an introductory Boundary Maintenance 101 tailgate session, followed by field work to immediately put those skills to good use. Our tasks for the day: Paint and clear the public land boundary line. Using either yellow (NPS) or red (USFS) paint, we’ll re-vamp the previously surveyed line and create a very visible boundary, which will prevent encroachments such as hunting, logging and building. We’re also on the lookout for Appalachian Trail survey monuments. These metal monuments can be tricky to find but mark important points along the line.

What You Should Bring

The 10 essentials for hiking. Water, lunch, first aid. Plenty of layers! We’ll be using paint and bushwacking so wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. Sturdy (and we mean sturdy!) boots, hopefully with a strong sole and ankle support
