Description
This trip will be a challenging but rewarding backpacking trip through Shenandoah National Park highlighting several of the park’s attractions, including Old Rag, Hawksbill, and multiple waterfall sections. We will meet on campus Sunday morning (3/8/26) before traveling to the park. Expect to return to campus around mid-afternoon on Tuesday (3/10/26). The planned route will cover approximately 26 miles over 3 days and 2 nights, with overnight stays at designated backcountry sites. Participants should be prepared for variable weather, including nighttime temperatures near or below freezing and the possibility of rain. Expect approximately 7,000 feet of total elevation gain and loss over the course of the trip. Prior backpacking experience is highly recommended for this trip. While there will be several bailout points along the loop, some sections are multiple miles from the nearest road. Participants are expected to bring all necessary backpacking gear. Please plan to pack enough food for 3 days and bring a reliable water filter. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions regarding this trip.
